In March , flowers bloom.

We welcome the 113th “March 8th” International Women’s Day, and the 100th Women’s Day in my country.

On March 8th Goddess Day, Pinyuan Medical is here to tell you about women’s bone health.

In 2018, the National Health and Medical Commission released the first epidemiological data on osteoporosis in China: the prevalence of osteoporosis in people over 50 years old in China was 19.2%, of which 32.1% were females and 6% males of the same age. Postmenopausal women are almost five times more likely to develop osteoporosis than men ! Of course, osteoporosis is not a patent of the elderly, and the low bone mass rate of people under the age of 50 in my country is as high as 32.9%.

Why does osteoporosis favor women? There are three main reasons

First , women have lower bone mass than men at any point in the life cycle. Bone mass is an important indicator of bone strength, so “delicate and watery” women are more likely to be affected by osteoporosis.

Secondly , both androgen and estrogen in the human body have a protective effect on bones, which can prevent the loss of bone mass with age. But for women, from menopause to 10 years after menopause (that is, perimenopause), estrogen begins to fluctuate, and its protective effect on bones disappears, bone destruction increases, and bone mass begins to lose rapidly. But men do not have this period, their bone mass has been slowly declining.

In addition , women also go through a series of special processes such as pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. Almost 100% of healthy pregnant women will have their own calcium deficiency after delivery. During pregnancy, the total amount of calcium delivered by the mother to the fetus is as high as 50g, and the amount of calcium delivered by the mother to the baby through milk for 6 months after delivery is also as high as 50g. Therefore, throughout pregnancy and lactation, the mother’s bone calcium loss is serious, accounting for about 7.5% of the mother’s total calcium. Women with more births and shorter birth intervals have a higher risk of osteoporosis.

Three peak periods of calcium loss for women

There are three “peaks” of calcium loss in a woman’s life:

The first one is during lactation , calcium is “sucked” away by the child through the milk, and bone density decreases due to the loss of calcium.

The second is during menopause , due to the decline in estrogen levels, calcium cannot be retained, and it is lost.

The third is in old age , when both men and women are prone to lose calcium. And women who have three such blows in their lifetime have a higher chance of suffering from osteoporosis than men.

The Importance of Testing Bone Density in Pregnant and Lactating Women

Pregnancy and lactation are special populations that need bone density testing. Ultrasonic bone density testing has no effect on pregnant women and fetuses, so it can be used to observe the dynamic changes of bone minerals during pregnancy and lactation multiple times.

Pre-pregnancy and pregnant women’s bone calcium reserves (too high or too low) are crucial to the healthy development of the fetus. Bone density testing can help you understand the bone status during pregnancy, do a good job of health care during pregnancy, and prevent pregnancy complications. Due to the common nutritional structure problems of adults in our country, regular inspection and correct guidance are very important.

Bone calcium loss is rapid during lactation. If the bone density is low at this time, it can lead to low bone calcium in nursing mothers and young children.

The question is, how to prevent osteoporosis?

If you already suffer from osteoporosis, simply eating calcium-rich foods or taking calcium tablets will have little effect.

In the treatment of osteoporosis, in addition to calcium supplements, drugs that promote calcium absorption and utilization should also be taken, so that the supplemented calcium can effectively reach and be used by bone tissue.

Of course, for patients of different ages, the treatment plan and treatment goals are different, and what to do should be carried out under the guidance of a doctor.

Middle-aged and elderly people without osteoporosis, especially menopausal women, can prevent it from the following points——

♥ Eat more calcium-rich foods, and you can also take calcium tablets under the guidance of a doctor.

♥ Do more jogging and other exercises that can improve bone strength.

♥ Ensure an average of 20 minutes of sun exposure every day to promote the production of vitamin D and the absorption of calcium.

♥ Reduce the factors that lead to osteoporosis, such as quitting smoking, quitting alcohol, increasing exercise, reducing salt and meat intake.

♥ Regular bone density examination after the age of 35.

Tips from manufacturers of Bone Densitometry:

Osteoporosis is preventable and treatable. With the development and progress of science and technology, the continuous emergence of new therapies and drugs can effectively prevent and treat osteoporosis, prevent the occurrence and recurrence of osteoporotic fractures, and allow middle-aged and elderly women to enjoy a stable life in their later years.

Finally, Pinyuan Medical wishes everyone to have beautiful and healthy bones at the same time! Bone is not loose, walking around the world!
